They can’t handle the slightest “mistreatment”—their ripening and shelf life are both short, and a gentle squeeze can break their skin. Yet, they insist on staining everything they touch with deep, inky color. They were everyone’s favorite wild fruit in childhood. Whenever we see them, we’re instantly transported back to those summer afternoons filled with cicadas and birdsong, playing under the mulberry tree with friends, our mouths darkened from eating too many berries.
