It derives its name from the compact, petite Beixi Lake and is also celebrated as the Capital of Maple Leaves. In autumn, the landscape ignites with vibrant red hues, the mountains of Laobiangou are blanketed in colorful foliage, while fallen red leaves drift along the flowing streams, a perfect setting to experience an authentic Northeast Chinese autumn by treading upon a thick carpet of leaves. Among Benxi's most famous culinary delights are Xiaoshi mutton soup and tofu skin. The steaming, savory mutton soup, prepared in large cauldrons, is best enjoyed with steamed flower rolls.
